"Teens and twentysomethings try out friends, fashions, hobbies, jobs, lovers, locations, and living arrangements to see what fits and what's "just not me." Midlifers deepen commitments to career, community, faith, and family that match their self-images, or feel trapped in existences that seem not their own. Elders regard life choices with regret or satisfaction based largely on whether they were "true" to themselves." - Karen Wright
If we as humans do not reach full self expression, then we will not have a high self-confidence or gain self determination. Therefore, we wouldn't be satisfied with ourselves. I'm seeing a trend in my generation and with many other generations, young and old; people seem to follow the same ideas, music, path, etc. I notice many of the people going to my school or merely living in my community wear the same type of clothing and participate in the same activities. For example, having TOMS, wearing braids in your hair, having the most expensive name brand luxuries, going shopping, spending money here and there, and many other activities. While all this is happening I am coming to a conclusion that my generation and many others aren't fully happy, mentally, emotionally, or spiritually. They follow the crowd, media, and mainstream. I don't really see any of them trying to go out of their way to prove to themselves their sole purpose for being on this planet.
My conclusion has led me to a life of more purpose and deeper thought. I want to share with everyone to find their inner self. I want them to figure out what really makes them happy. I have found my purpose by reaching inside, going beyond my limits, and learning the kind of person I am and who I want to become. I strive to be different and to be irrelevant in life. In which, this gives me the chance to make new experiences and moments in time that many others won't be able to find.
“True and lasting inner peace can never be found in external things. It can only be found within in. And then, once we find and nurture it with ourselves, it radiates outward." -Buddah.
In my opinion, this quote wraps up my thoughts well. It clearly states that once we all find our inner self, then maybe we can share that together and be a more loving and caring species. I'd like for you as my reader to think about yourself-the dynamics of you, the achievements you want to have, how you want others to see you, and what could you do to make this world a better place. Then you shall spread your wings and let it show through your smile and vibrant personality because deep down some where we are all caring in some way.

“Man surprised me most about humanity.Because he sacrifices his health in order to make money.
ReplyDeleteThen he sacrifices money to recuperate his health. And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present; the result being that he does not live in the present or the future; he lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having never really lived.”

I totally agree with your post Lauren! One thing that I see a lot, with people of all ages, is that they seek that external meaning in romantic relationships. I don't think this is healthy at all. I disagree with the idea of finding another person who will "complete" you. This is because I don't think you can be in a healthy relationship unless you feel like a complete person. Before you can be ready to share your life with someone else you need to have a sense of who you are and what you stand for. That knowledge will pave the pathway to true meaningful friendships and relationships.
Great post Lauren! I like your use of quotes and Psychology Today. You are truly a deep thinker. One thing I noticed though, is that you don't tell us who Karen Wright is - it would be nice to know who she is in relation to this blog post subject.
